What Are the Downsides of Regenerative Medicine?

The main downsides of regenerative medicine are that most therapies are not FDA-approved, are rarely covered by insurance, produce a response that varies between patients, and cannot rebuild tissue that is already end-stage. Response also develops over weeks rather than immediately.

The Four Honest Limitations

1. Most of these therapies are not FDA-approved. Stem cell and exosome products are not approved to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. In Florida they are administered legally under SB 1768 with physician supervision, but that is a different statement from FDA approval, and any clinic blurring the two is misrepresenting it.

2. Insurance rarely covers it. Most regenerative procedures are considered investigational by insurers and are paid out of pocket. See insurance and regenerative medicine.

3. Response varies, and it is not guaranteed. Outcomes differ with the condition, its severity, age, metabolic health, and the tissue involved. No responsible clinic can promise a specific result, and results published by one clinic do not transfer to another.

4. It does not reverse end-stage damage. A joint with no remaining cartilage, a completely ruptured tendon, or a severely deformed joint is a structural problem. Biologic therapy signals repair; it does not rebuild a joint surface that is gone. Where that is the finding, saying so is part of the consultation.

What It Is Reasonable to Expect

Regenerative medicine is best understood as an option positioned between conservative care that has stopped working and surgery that a patient is not ready for. Its strongest case is in earlier-stage degeneration and chronic soft-tissue problems where healing has stalled — not as a last resort after everything else has failed.

The Diligence Worth Doing

Ask who supervises the procedure and under what licence, where the biologic product is sourced and whether a Certificate of Analysis exists per lot, and whether you are being assessed or sold a package.
