PRP Therapy: Definition in Plain Language — 6 Growth Factors, 1 Autologous Source

PRP therapy is an autologous regenerative procedure that concentrates platelets from a patient's own blood, delivering 6 key growth factors at 5 to 10 times normal circulating concentration to an injury site to stimulate tissue repair.

What PRP Therapy Is

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses the patient's own blood as the source material. A blood draw of 30 to 60 mL is centrifuged to concentrate the platelet fraction. The resulting preparation is injected at the treatment site on the same day.

The therapeutic value of PRP resides in the 6 growth factors stored in platelet alpha granules: platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF). Each of these growth factors signals specific repair processes in the injected tissue.

Because PRP uses only the patient's own blood, it carries no donor-related immune reaction risk. The treatment is classified as autologous.

How PRP Therapy Works

The mechanism of PRP therapy is growth factor delivery at concentrations exceeding what the body naturally delivers to an injury site. When platelets activate upon contact with tissue collagen at the injection site, they release their alpha granule contents simultaneously, creating a concentrated growth factor surge.

PDGF drives fibroblast proliferation and collagen production. TGF-beta regulates the inflammatory-to-proliferative healing phase transition. VEGF stimulates new blood vessel formation in poorly vascularized chronic tendinopathy. EGF drives epithelial and mesenchymal cell proliferation. IGF-1 promotes protein synthesis and muscle repair. FGF supports wound healing, angiogenesis, and fibroblast activity.

The combined effect is a locally concentrated biological repair stimulus that natural healing cannot produce at the same intensity.

How Rebuild Regen Uses PRP Therapy

PRP therapy at Rebuild Regen Medical Clinic at 3320 N Federal Hwy #101, Lighthouse Point, FL is used for orthopedic conditions, hair restoration, and as a component of ED treatment. Ultrasound guidance ensures accurate delivery for joint and tendon injections. Patient Pure X (PPX), an autologous EV upgrade, provides approximately 3x the extracellular vesicle concentration of standard PRP for patients who want a more sophisticated autologous signal. See the complete PRP guide.

Is PRP Therapy the Right Option for Your Situation?

PRP therapy is the appropriate first-line regenerative biologic for mild to moderate orthopedic conditions, partial tendon injuries, hair loss, and specific aesthetic or functional applications. For advanced degeneration or prior PRP non-response, DayZero™ exosomes or stem cells provide a stronger biological signal.

Risks and Limitations of PRP Therapy

PRP therapy results depend on the patient's own platelet biology, which declines in quality with age and certain health conditions. Blood thinners and NSAIDs must be stopped before treatment. PRP is not appropriate for full-thickness tendon ruptures requiring surgery or for end-stage OA where joint replacement is indicated.
