Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Stem Cell Therapy?

Patients with active cancer, active systemic infection, or end-stage structural joint damage are generally not candidates for stem cell therapy. Candidacy also depends on the condition being treated, its stage, and a physician review of overall health and current medications.

Where Stem Cell Therapy Is Not Appropriate

Active malignancy. Patients with active cancer are not candidates. This is assessed at consultation as a matter of course.

Active systemic infection. Treatment is deferred until the infection is resolved.

End-stage structural damage. Bone-on-bone arthritis with significant deformity is a mechanical problem. A biologic signal cannot restore a joint surface that no longer exists, and a clinic offering it anyway is selling something it cannot deliver.

A complete tear or unstable joint. A fully ruptured tendon or ligament is a surgical question. Imaging comes first.

Expectation mismatch. A patient seeking a guaranteed or immediate result is not a good candidate for a therapy whose response develops over weeks and varies between individuals.

What Requires Review Rather Than Exclusion

Anticoagulant therapy, certain blood disorders, immunosuppression, and poorly controlled diabetes do not automatically rule a patient out, but they change the assessment and are reviewed by the physician before candidacy is confirmed.

If You Are Not a Candidate
